New LIFE UrbanGreeningPlans project where the LET will take part

The Metropolitan Laboratory of Ecology and Territory of Barcelona (LET) will participate in the LIFE project, co-financed by the European Commission, called LIFE UrbanGreeningPlans “Designing innovative mechanisms to plan, implement, strengthen and manage green infrastructures in (peri) urban areas”.

The Biodiversity Strategy 2030 of the European Union calls on cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants to create Urban Greening Plans by the end of 2021. These plans aim to return nature to cities to support biodiversity and mitigate climate change. To help cities achieve this ambitious goal, the European Commission will create an EU Urban Greening Platform, under a new Green City Accord with cities and mayors. This is the framework of the new LIFE UrbanGreeningPlans Project, which will work on greening urban areas through implementing better management practices and Nature Based Solutions.

The project has been recently awarded, has a duration of two years (2021-2023) and the metropolises of Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Lisbon and Milan will participate. Specifically, the LET will apply a new model called Integrated Socio-ecological Analysis (SIA) in order to explore alternative land use scenarios in the metropolis of Barcelona and help to seek consensus with the different administrations involved in the Urban Master Plan for the Barcelona metropolitan area.
